I have to admit, Mikey Wax found me. I was aware of him – off in the corners of my mind, but I hadn’t seen him live and there were so many good artists I had seen live to interview that he didn’t quite register. My mistake – a lot of people know him, love him and are about to see him live on his first headline tour. So I was really happy to get the note from his agent about the tour and the music.
Mikey is a pop singer originally from upstate New York who got the music bug when he was 8 years old, inspired by Billy Joel and the Beatles. By the time he went off to Nashville for college, his piano chops were first rate as were his skills as a singer and songwriter. He released his debut album, Change Again, independently in 2009 and started getting traction on social media with the music video for the single "In Case I Go Again" landing on the YouTube homepage and collecting over half a million views.
His next album, Constant Motion was self-released in September, 2011 and debuted at #47 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The single "Counting On You" received radio airplay on Adult Top 40 stations across the U.S, and eventually made Mikey the only unsigned artist on the US Mediabase HOT A/C top-40 chart. "Counting On You" was also featured weekly on the FOX hit reality TV series So You Think You Can Dance as the show's elimination song, and was also used in the movie trailer for the major motion picture Playing For Keeps.
The success of Constant Motion was built by thousands of new fans, including Superbowl MVP Aaron Rodgers who publicly mentioned that Mikey is a top artist on his playlist. "In Case I Go Again" was also featured during the 2012 Summer Olympics on NBC, and on the ABC Family hit show Pretty Little Liars. Can't do better than getting your music into sports!
His new self-titled album, released on Toucan Cove Records (he got a label!), is on the iTunes top 100 pop chart. The lead single "You Lift Me Up" has received nearly 6 million Spotify streams. The second single from the album, "Only One", is now receiving nation-wide radio airplay on SiriusXM's The Pulse.
But as everyone in this business knows, it is hard for an artist to survive and thrive without touring. And that is Mikey’s next step up the ladder - his first USA tour this spring with three concerts in Kansas, Illinois and Ohio. He is no stranger to the road since he has been touring in support of bands like Parachute, Matt Wertz, Jon McLaughlin, Howie Day, Ryan Cabrera, Tyler Hilton and Andy G.
So, I guess you could say 2015 has already been an exciting year for Mikey Wax and it is only April. Maybe it will get really exciting with a gig in LA before the year is out.
